Books play an integral role in my son's life. As he grows up in the home of a librarian and teacher, we will work hard to expose him to books knowing full well that being literate in our age stretches far beyond books.
Have you seen the new wave of sites for kids? Walking through the library's youth lab, nearly every other kid is nurturing their webkinz.
I had to go buy myself one so that I could check out the craze. Dewey, a little stuffed dog, sits on my desk at work. I log in for a couple of minutes each day to feed and earn webkinz dollars to buy him virtual things. The target audience for webkinz is 6 to 10. Six years old! Wow.
What will it mean to be literate for the next generation of readers?
